Introduction - About Daisen Organic

Growing and consuming organic produce is very important to us as an organisation and as individual people. In some ways it can be said that it is  difficult to grow things in the Daisen area without the help of chemicals due to the high humidity and large number of insects. However, there are an increasing number of organic farmers in the area that are proving that organic farming IS possible. The overall goal of our Daisen Organic programme is to support the existing organic produce growing community and to also expand the organic movement through education, knowledge sharing and by providing opportunities to farm organically.

Connecting organic farmers to customers who wish to buy organic produce

Due to various reasons (including economies of scale, labour shortages and regulations concerning size and shape of produce) it is difficult for organic farmers, especially small-scale farmers, to make a profit when selling organic produce to supermarkets and farmers organisations. We plan on making it easier for organic farmers to sell directly to consumers by introducing initiatives such as:

  • Host regular “Farmer’s Markets” where farmers and the general public can meet directly.

  • Advertise seasonal products that are for sale through our social media channels.

Providing opportunities for small-scale organic farmers or organic farming for personal use

  • We are planning on creating an allotment system within a larger field in which all allotment holders will grow organically. The plots can be rented out on a yearly basis. A certain number of resources such as tools will be shared. Renters will work together on the upkeep of the larger field.

Education and knowledge sharing

We believe educating people about the benefits and importance of organic farming to both physical health and that of the environment is an essential task. Not only is the WHAT of organic farming important, the HOW of organic farming is fundamental too. We plan to share information about the “what” and the “how” of organic farming by:

  • Sharing research, articles, links etc about the benefits of organic farming to personal health and to the health of the environment on our website and social media platforms.

  • Sharing information, recommended reading and tips about the practicalities of organic and natural farming.

  • Organise workshops and lectures on how to farm organically and/or in a natural way.
